A DMF molecule possesses a formyl group (HCO-) covalently bonded to a nitrogen atom which is further connected to two CH₃ groups, giving it the structure C₃H₇NO. The carbonyl group (C=O) in DMF has a dipole moment along with the negative charge center and the lone pair of electrons on the nitrogen further promotes basicity. DMF is a stable Molecule because amide groups allow planar structures. Resonance also adds to stability. DMF is a homemade compound and in addition to being a solvent, a solvent and participant in numerous physico-chemical operations, the presence of methyl groups at the nitrogen atom affects solubility, reactivity and properties of the nitrogen.
